You can make your home more energy efficient in many different ways from smaller jobs like switching to energy saving light bulbs to bigger jobs such as double-glazing, an energy efficient boiler or insulation. These larger projects will save you more energy – and money – in the long run, but the outgoing costs in the short term can often put off even the most eco-conscious of homeowners. This is where getting a grant from your local council to help with the costs of the work can really assist – as well as adding pounds to your property’s value.
But obtaining a grant from your council isn’t easy, particularly when most people don’t know what’s actually available to them. Each area and council has different schemes available to their residents, so you should always check with your council directly. However we have come up with some basics to help you become more energy efficient in the home with energy efficiency and other grants.
Types of Grants
Most energy efficiency grants are actually provided by central government funds, but applications are made at a local level through your council. Firstly, you should decide on the type of project you’re interested in doing to improve your home’s energy efficiency. Generally speaking, the following projects could have funding available:
- Cavity wall insulation
- Loft insulation and draught proofing
- Heating
- Appliances
- Energy saving light bulbs
- Micro renewable energy sources
- Radiator panels
Finding out what’s Available
The type of grant you apply for depends on the area you live in. Below are a few examples.
England
The Warm Front Grant provides a package of insulation and energy efficient heating measures up to a maximum value of £2,700. The grant is available to the over 60s in receipt of some form of income or other benefit, or homeowners with children under 16 in the house also in receipt of a state benefit.
Wales
The Home Energy Efficiency Scheme could make up to £5,000 available to transform your home into a greener, more eco-friendly property. The same rules apply as with England’s Warm Front grant.
Scotland
Under the Warm Deal programme, homeowners receiving some form of income or housing benefit, or the over 60s, have £500 available from central funds to spend on insulation to keep their homes warmer and more energy efficient.
Northern Ireland
The Warm Homes grant provides a package of energy efficiency and heating measures up to the value of £850. Energy efficiency advice and guidance is tailored to each household. The scheme is aimed at owner-occupiers and people who rent their homes from private landlords.
Local Schemes
There are often local schemes available that give you a particular benefit – such as a rebate on your council tax in return for Installing Insulation in your home. If in doubt about what is available, contact your council’s local energy efficiency or sustainability department, or check local media for the latest offers, particularly as it draws closer to winter.
Energy Saving Trust
The Energy Saving Trust is a non-profit organisation, funded both by government and the private sector, set up to address climate change issues. For information and advice on energy efficiency issues, and to see if you’re eligible for any local grant schemes through them, you can call their helpline on 0800 512 012 to speak to a local advisor.

@ Tammy.Warm Front has now ceased to operate and will no longer be available. Applications closed in January, info can be found on the DECC website or the new.gov.uk site.Your best option is to speak to your Council’s Private Housing Dept and find out if they have any schemes or discounted loans which you could use to upgrade your heating and windows. Best of luck!

They all need repainting, but my husband now has AMD and has little sight in one eye, and arthritis in his ankles, which are prone to giving way at unexpected times. He said he will go up a ladder to repair and repaint, but I do not want him to do this for obvious reasons. Is there any grant available for us to have these windows double-glazed? Our heating bills are astronomical despite being on a decent tariff.

Hello, I am a homeowner and have recently became a dad. With winter approaching, my partner and I have concerns about the state of our windows. We replaced our boiler last year which has made a little difference. But the fact that our windows don’t close probably and allows the wind and the rain to come through we desperately need them changed. Could you tell me if we are entitled to any help. Thank you
In this instance the customer spent a few weekends stripping all of the existing wall tiles and removing the existing bathroom suite.
I’m 68, have osteo arthritis in my hands, knees, back and hips. Winter is approaching and I’m not looking forward to it. My windows are over 20 years old, and some no longer open. Others have a broken seal and the condensation is particularly bad. The window sills are beginning to rot. The draughts are really bad as you walk past or are anywhere near the windows in bad weather. A draught also comes in through the door frame. I am on retirement pension, A/A and a works pension. Could I get any help to replace the windows.

I presengly own my own home in, London. Am also a ,single parent with my one child by previous relationship. My spouse is no working or getting any, benefits because I amworking. Over the years I sacrifices to put in, double glaze windows , new boiler. At the back of property we have ,one old metal door also a window wich I cannot aford to change due to my financial circumstances. This winter we really suffer because when the heat put on it seems to go through the old door. Sometimes when we are in the property it feels as if we are outside. Any contribution in getting a new back door and window would help ,enriched our home comfort. I work hard to maintain the family but we are suffering disconfort because the cold is coming inside throug the metal door. When the heater is turned on is does not make any difference because the room is losing all the warm heat. How can I get some form of assistant we would welcome any for of good will gesture.

My wife and I live in a bungalow in Suffolk, which we bought in 1994, when we were both working. It was a building society repossession and was completely derelict, it was literally 4 bear walls, no bathroom, no kitchen, not even a sink, or any lightbulbs, plug/switch facias. Absolutely everything had been completely stripped out. We began renovating, one area/room at a time as/when we could afford it. However we had only got about 3/4 done when I had a massive stroke. Following A life-long medical condition, I often become anaemic, and require iron supplements. I was booked in as a day-care patient in a main London Hospital, where I had been a patient since 1958, my consultant – widely considered to be one of the world’s leading professor’s of Gastroenterology, was unfortunately out of the country on the day that the transfusion. However, being a fairly routine procedure, he left it in the hands of one of his colleagues. To cut an otherwise very long story short, she administered a substantial overdose. That caused an anaphylactic reaction, which was not picked-up quickly enough, and I subsequently suffered a massive stroke. I was unconscious for some 3-1/2 months and in hospital for a total of 8 months. Because I have been disabled since, I am no longer able to work, and my wife also left the job that she had enjoyed doing for more than 17 years, since she left school to become my full-time carer. Accordingly, much of the work that we had planned to do at home, fell by the wayside. A:) I was/am physically no longer capable, and moreover, we are now wholly reliant on benefits which are not adequate enough to allow us pay for goods & labourers. Fortunately, we had reached a point whereby we have been able to scrape by, but we have no spare cash sufficient enough to afford anything other than necessary routine maintenance However, we have now reached the time whereby we replacing our windows has become critically urgent. Therefore, as much as I regret it, we are forced to ask for financial help by way of a grant or a loan. Unfortunately, the absolute maximum monthly amount that we could afford to repay, is £60:00. Can anybody advise me of any financial assistance that I could apply and/or be eligible for? We really have to try and sort something out before the cold weather returns, because we really must also reduce our fuel costs. Thank you in anticipation. Gee.
Hi, I desperately need double glazing installed,my windows are literally rotting out of their wooden frames. I receive D.L.A. and incapacity benefit. I suffer from P.P.S. (Post Polio Syndrome).I am a male and 57 years of age. I do not have any savings. I do not think this governments “Green Deal” is of any use to me Are there any other Grants available to me. Thanks for your time.
When me and my ex partner bought our house we replaced the boiler but we didn’t do the radiators with the intention of doing them at a later date. We then split up and 3 yrars on this has still not been done. The radiators are very old and have been painted numerous occasions and don’t give out much heat at all in the winter. Just wondered if there are any free radiator grants avalable. I am a single parent with a 4 year old child and in reciept of working tax crrdits due to my low income. Thanks

HELP!! I’m currently living in a rented property through a housing association. My problem is the windows. I have single glazed windows which are the original windows fitted when the property was first built 1950’s. In winter y flat is extremely cold and I can’t Offord to heat the flat to keep warm. I have no children, disability or looking after anyone under the age of 16. I am a single person. The flats in my area are currently having all new double glazed windows fitted. I have requested new windows but unfortunately I’m not on the list to get any new replacement windows. Is there anything grants out there I could qualify for? Im working full time and getting working tax credits but it isn’t a lot I receive from them and find it hard to get by. I feel like giving up but I would like some advice if there’s anything out there for someone single living on their own. Thanks in advanced.
@nat. On what basis are the other flats having double glazing fitting and why is yours not included? There are measure under the government’s energy saving initiatives that public landlords like Housing Associations are taking advantage off. Take a look here for information and then ask your housing association whether there is anything that can be done for your property
can i get a grant or help to replace our windows in the house ? it is soooo cold in the winter we have to seal the windows closed to keep us all warm. we are on a low income so cant afford them.
Hi, please can someone give me advice, I live in an old house 1894, with my husband and four children. I work part time, an am a full time student. We are on a low income and receive working tax credits. We have cement floors downstairs, the gas boiler is old, and is now not working, the windows are rotten, and some off the window ledges have broken off, the back door is rotten, and due to the cost and its odd size we cant replace it. We have been to the council for advice, and they have been very unhelpful. The kids cant play iin their rooms in the winter because it so cold. We use a portable gas heater to heat the main room. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.
Hello I have three single glazed aluminium windows which let the cold in. In winter, there is not much point in putting the heating on as the heat goes out the windows. I tried putting plastic over them but the condensation is taking the plaster off the wall in some areas. I am desperate for these windows to be replaced. I have recently been diagnosed with early stage COPD. I am on ESA contributions based, and am also on DLA middle rate care. I have rang the Home Heat Helpline, Energy Saving Advice Service, Severnwye.org and Npower Health through Warmth, and none of them can help me. I am desperate, and am worried about the winter because it is too cold to sit in my room in winter and I even have to wear a hat and gloves. I am worried about my health. I have mental health problems and am also worried that it will make my mental health worse.
Hi i have wooden windows that are rotten i am 57 live alone and receive E.S.A .can i get help with new windows …I am in Scotland
@chrissy. From what you’ve told us, we’re surprised you are not eligble for help under the affordable warmth scheme. Try this Energy Grants Calculator on the government website. There are several grants and allowances available to the disabled and/or those suffering from a chronic illness. Take a look at this page on the Citizen’s Advice website for a comprehensive list and details of how to apply.
Hello I am living in a bungalow that was built in 1962. It has very old double glazing the type that can be opened from the outside and a number of panels have gone. In addition the property is heated with Oil and we would like to install a Gas Boiler. Do you know if there is Grant to assist us in the Wigan area? I am almost 62 years of age.
I had a free boiler fitted last year but they didn’t change the old radiators and i don’t have any in 3 of my rooms kitchen living room or little bedroom is there any grants for radiator please as the ones i have have are old and its freezing in my living room without heating.thanks
@Les. You may be entitled to some help under the government Green Deal – details are here
Or you could approach your local council for information on renovation grants.
@kel. Did you have your free boiler under the Green Deal or ECO scheme? If so contact the green deal assessor again and find out why radiators were not included.
Hi, need advice. I moved into a local authority property last year, and have storage heaters, they are so inadequate and it costs me a fortune in electricity through a prepay meter. We have no gas in the village and have since discovered that other properties had oil central heating systems fitted but the previous tenants refused it. I have 3 children in the house all under 7 years old. Can I get the council to install the oil heating, so as to provide reasonable cost heating. We would also be without heat and hot water if there was ever a power cut. Thanks
I really need some help urgently I have a brother who has mental health condition for over 30 years he has been sectioned in hospital under mental act 1982 I have been advised that as I am his eldest sister I am his appropriate adult he lives with my sister James is on benefits and has a small works pension my Sister is on Job seekers allowance they need a new bathroom suite the ceiling in the kitchen has leaked they are to proud to ask for help, I have a builder in he has replaced the leaking toilet he is putting new bath sink I am helping to pay for this but it seems to spiraling out of control is there a grant I can get to help with the cost then the ceiling needs to replaced with plaster board I am just a bit concerned that the builder is taking so long Thank you
hi, i would like to know if im eligible for a grant for new windows,im on employment&support. My windows fill up with condensation, and some of the locks cannot be locked anymore, all the rubbers are falling out aswel. What department would i need? regards davey
@Davey. Condensation is not necessarily a sign that you need new windows. If your house is well insulated and ventilated then condensation will not become an issue (creating mould etc)
You can get your home assessed for warmth/energy efficiency and may eligible for improvements under the Green Deal and/or ECO initiatives. So try the Energy Saving Trust or search for Green Deal in your area. Your local council will also be able to advise you of any local organisations that undertake this kind of work. Unfortunately we cannot provide contact details for your council as you’ve not stated which part of the country you’re from. Hope you find some help.
@mason74. You should ask at your local council. If other properties were fitted with oil central heating, there’s a good chance they will include yours in the next round of installations or as a retrospective fit individually.
Got new boiler, cavity wall insulation but all pointless as my Windows have had it! I can’t afford any new ones so another freezing winter. Does anyone know any grants that are available for them. Thanks.
@karen hartman. You may be entitled to some help with windows under the green deal if the assessment highlights this as an issue. You pay for these through your energy bill but the energy savings are supposed to mean that there will be no more for you to pay out monthly. You could also try to see whether you are eligible for a charitable grant – check out the Turn to Us website
Hi I’m 33 years of age and my wee boy is 2 iam a single parent and we currently living in a council house. I don’t work atm and receiving just benefits and I’m struggling to pay for the oil it’s too expensive especially coming into the winter. And iam due a new boiler next year.i was wondering it it is possible to get gas heat if put in I stead of oil because you can pay the gas pay as you go and it’s instant and would be a lot cheaper for me and easier.would I be entitled to a grant or something or help towards the cost because I defently couldn’t afford to put the gas I myself. Thank you.
Hi, me and my flatmate are 24 , no kids and live above a mccolls (mccolls is our landlord). My flat mates room has secondary glazing and my room does not, but the windows are warped outwards in places, which lets so much cold air/noise in. They had quotes done, but now do not want to pay to get secondarsecondary glazing. Is there any grants or anything to give them some incentive to get the work done. It’s so cold and the whole flat is electric only, its too expensive to heat up just my room atm!Any advice would be amazing
@joanne. If you are living in a council rented property this is something you would need to discuss with them. You could investigate whether you are entitled to help with heating under the warm home discount scheme or the Cold weather payment allowance which is due to start again soon.
@markus01. Ask you landlord to see if the work can done under the ECO/Green Deal schemes. This could work out well for them financially and for future letting potential.
My mother is 74 and lives alone in a bought ex council house She recieves a state pension plus a small private pension from my late fathers workplace Her heating system which has been in place for over 25 years has now become obsolete the gas fire has had to be disconnected as a danger and although the back back boiler still provides heating there is the fear that may also breakdown Iwould be grateful for any information regarding grants or any help in installing combi boiler
@JohnMcNiff. There is a range of grants and benefits available to help the elderly stay warm. Try his government web page for a full list.
My mother in law (74 and recently widowed) owns her own home, however the front door and back door are wooden. She struggles to open them! She lives in Merseyside. PR postcode. Is there any help she can get?
Hi I’m looking for some information on a new central heating system to include new radiators. I’m currently claiming child and working tax credits. So is there still a government scheme to provide the funding for these home improvements? I’ve also got dome small electrical work that needs doing.
I have recently bought a flat in Scotland which I’ll be living in with my sister. I am 23 and working with an income below £15,000, my sister is a full time student. The flat I’ve bought needs the boiler replaced which I cannot afford on my salary. Is there any help I can get such as grants or interest free loans I can apply for?
@Andrew. Take a look at our article on the Green Deal and ECO schemes here
@Duncan. Are you in rented accommodation? If so, the landlord is responsible for boiler replacement. If you own the property you could see if you are eligible for one the Green Deal schemes.
@Angelahollindrake. All wooden doors are prone to swelling as the weather changes. She could get a joiner in to remove them and seal them with a waterproof coating. Alternatively replacing them with Upvc doors might be a solution. Try your local council to see if there are any renovation grants available – these are generally means tested. Also there may be help available under the government’s Green Deal initiatives.
Hi, could someone please, please tell me if I’m eligible for any help. I am physically disabled 24 year old, work full time claiming Working Tax Credits and DLA high rate. I live with my mother in a council flat which has very old night storage heaters. I am freezing all of the time, whenever At home I am shivering and having flare ups of my condition. I can’t have the heating on when needed and is so so expensive to run. Can anyone tell me if COUNCIL tenants can get heating system update grants? Ideally need a combi boiler and central heating. Thanks!
@Ellie. Contact your council’s housing department. They should have details of what they can do and also of any grant schemes available. If they cannot help, ask to speak to someone in a different department who can.
our wooden windows a doors are rotten my husband is disabled and has breathing problems, we also have grandchild aged 3 living with us. is there any help available?? I have lost faith in greendeal ????? Thanks
@Spider. Have you tried a Home Improvement Agency in your area at all?
The council are putting gas into the houses next door to us, we bought our council house many years ago and wondered if we would be able to get this done also. Would it be the council or the gas board we contact and would we be eligible for a grant. We are both in full-time employment.
@Carduf. You would have to arrange this via the gas board. Check with your local authority to see whether grants are available in your area.
I have 1st generation double glazing that is falling apart with big gaps that allow wind to blow through, plus we live next to a noisy main road so it also allows loud noise through too. My wife works and I receive pip and ESA can someone please tell me is there any type of grant available that I can claim to help with the cost of replacing it?

Hi I have a mortgage with an ex council house are there any grants I can get for attic conversion thankyou
I live in a one bedroom cottage dated 1857. The cottage is made of stone so we cannot have cavity wall insulation. I recently saw on homes under the hammer a cottage in Wales that had pebble dash effect insulation installed on the outside of the property . I wondered if this is still available through a grant scheme for our property.
@gi78. This is unlikely. Try your local council to see if there are any home improvement grants available. These (where available) are only allocated to people on really low incomes though.
@dorothy and other with double glazing problems. Sometimes windows are covered by the Green Deal funding schemes, but other measures such as insulation must be addressed at the same time. Some funding is available for those on low incomes under this scheme, for others, finance schemes can be set up through your energy bills. Try the options in the article above for other grants, but also look at temporary measures you can take such as adhesive film and strips etc.
@teresa sweetman. Unfortunately there are not many grants available for loft conversions.
@ronnie. Try the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund.
We live in a park home. We are on income support at present. We have a son who receives high rate DLA and income based ISSA.. can we get a grant for windows and or another heating system.Although the property is only 10 years old, these things have deteriated..The heating and water system runs on bottled gas and is not very hot. Can someone point me in the right direction. My energy company so NO because it’s a park home…. Thank you Sue
@Sue. Check with your local council, many areas are now helping with insulation grants for park homes – especially those on low incomes.
Can I get a grant toward secondary glazing. I live in a very old property that I rent and am not allowed to change the outward look of the cottage, but I can have secondary glazing that is not visible from the outside. I am over 60 and have a state pension and DLA.
My mum 80 years old and owns her own x council home. The windows in her home are not up to much and she could really do with them being replaced. Would she be entitled to any help with a grant from her council. Regards M Lehmann
Is there any way I could get help to convert attic to a bedroom as there are no 4 beds in area I am and have a child who has behaviour problems and dnt want to up route him when settle in school ?
@Jax. You can try the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund for secondary glazing.
@Maggie she should check directly as all different local authorities have different policies.
@annie. Are his behaviour problems registered? What did you local council say when you asked them about grants?
Is there any grant or easy loan available to replace my boiker which British gas said is 85% inefficient. I am single mum working and my earning are £1000 a yr above the free boiler grant allowance so im not entitled to help. I have a 4 yr old and a 19 yr old who is on high rate PIP for his disabilitis with down syndrome . I have been refused a bank loan to get the work done and don’t want to go with a shark loan. Some days the boiler won’t work. I have the heating on a lot as I have my elderly parents late 70s here through the week to help while I’m working as they live 100 miles away. they are cold all the time so I tend to keep the heating on for them. I know I can’t claim for them as they don’t permanently live here but do need their help. I have put a grate in the fireplace so I do have the open fire going as well for us. But just wanted to know if their is any affordable scheme around that I could or would be eligible to apply for.
@Mich. Under the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund you can get up to £1,000 towards the cost of installing any 2 of a number of specified measure including a condensing gas boiler on mains gas. To qualify you have to satisfy the following criteria:
You’re improving a domestic property in England or Wales that you own or live in
You have either a Green Deal advice report or an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that’s less than 2 years old (note you can claim £100 off the cost of a Green Deal Advice Report)
The improvements you’re applying for are covered by the scheme and recommended in your EPC or Green Deal advice report. You’ll also need to use a Green Deal provider or installer registered with the GDHI. More information is here.
can anyone tell me if there is any help out there that can help me replace my old boiler. both myself and husband works and we do not get any benefits we can pay something towards the cost but would like some help with the rest. thank you
@Angie. There are some boiler offers with the energy companies (e.g British Gas currently runs one). Or you could try the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund.
My parents have just been told that the only gas they can have coming into the house is for the boiler as this is a separate feed. The rest of the gas pipes have been condemned, they have a gas fire and gas cooker and now will have to purchase new and pay for install. They live in an ex council house and are just 70 yrs old, is there any help out there for them
My ex husband is on benefits and is nearly 70. He is in poor health. His boiler has broken down and there is no other heating in his house. He has applied for help through Eon but has been told he does not qualify because his house is too ‘energy efficient. What can he do now. He cannot pay for a new boiler.
Hi, I live on a very busy main road and over the last few years the noise is increasing and increasing. I’ve a 12 month old boy, 6 yr old girl, myself an my husband and we are constantly being woken from around 4 am with the noise. I have reported this to the council and I’m desperate to upgrade our double glazing to acoustic glass just to cut the noise out. It lasts from 4am – 10am then starts again 2pm – 8/9pm. Is there any grant that I can apply for to help with the cost of replacing my windows. Acoustic glass is apparently very expensive. Only 1 of us is in full time work. We don’t claim any other benefits and only receive child benefit. Many thanks
Was wondering if anyone is aware of any grants that are available in Scotland for replacement windows?
@Lisa. They could try the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund
or
The Home Heat Helpline
or
The Energy Saving Trust.
@Grandma. He could try the Boiler Replacement Scheme . This is for owner occupiers whose total gross income is less than £40,000 and is to help with the cost of replacing boilers which are 15 years or older with new boilers.
Hi, can anyone tell me if there are any grants available in Wales for replacement windows. We are currently spending about a £1 an hour to heat our home using GCH and have single glazed windows. My husband and I both work and do not claim any benefits, but we have a 4 yr old and also my elderly mother living with us.
@tiredmum. We don’t know of any grants for additional glazing because of road noise. Ask at your local council to see if they can help.
@jade. The Energy Saving Trust has a useful page of information on Scotland grants and support here.
@Bookiebarbara. Your best option is the Government’s Green Deal Initiative.
Hi I recently suffered a stroke as a result of this I am now disabled and suffer from neuropathic pain which is made worse by the cold my home has wooden windows and doors which are almost non existent for energy conservation. are there any double glasing grants available in the Walsall area?
@Q – You should try the Government Green Deal or ask your local council about Home Improvement Grants. The Stroke Association offers “Life after Stroke” grants for various needs. The contact for your area is GrantsWMid@stroke.org.uk.
Hi All I have just moved into a council property does any one know if I can claim any kind of grant for removing a back boiler? I work part-time on a low income and do not receive any benefits, all help seems to be for people on benefits any advice will be appreciated
Hi I live in my ex – partner’s home as we have a child together. I am in receipt of ESA (Support Group) and the windows in the house are over 20 years old and all the seals are damaged, leading to condensation and marking between the glazing. All the windows are different and we’re not professionally fitted by the previous tenant. Would it be possible for my ex-partner to receive a partly funded replacement as a home owner? I did benefit from a replacement boiler through HEES, when I had no hot water and in thst case ex paid the first £300. My heating bills are high and have had to resort to a prepayment meter. Sincerely, A Doyle
@jo. If you are renting the property you will need to speak to the council before removing a back boiler anyway. They may also be able to offer assistance with a replacement etc
@Seren66. You may be entitled to something under the Green Deal scheme – check here to see.
Hi i am disabled and on esa support group I am a single parent of 4 and my house ( mortgaged ) desperatley needs new windows they do not shut properly and are very drafty and also i need new fencing as my fence is completly rotton and blown down in places so. My property is not secure anymore can anyone point me in the right direction where to look for help towards paying for this work as i cant afford it on my esa thanks
My wife & myself are disabled and live in private rented accm. and the landlord has said that he cant afford to have new double glazed windows in the front of the property. The units have blown & we are unable to open the windows for ventilation as the only opening is a fire escape window to & bottom. Is there any grants for replacement double glazed windows ??
@donewalking. Try the Turn2Us website or the Green deal initiatives
hello please can someone give me some advice just about to move into a housing association house and I have found out there is no gas only electric storage heaters !!!! I have a twelve year old daughter and a son who is 21 and on esa as he has autism can I get any help with a grant to either upgrade or change to oil etc.
@Linzi. Ask first at the Housing Association to see if there are any plans to change and also ask them if they are planning any work under the Green Deal initiative to a more energy efficient/economical option.
Is there any help/Grants available in Scotland, to replace 25 year old windows? My husband is 65 years old.
i’ve recently moved in to a council flat but in one of the bedrooms the secondary glazing window is missing but for some reason the council won’t replace it, I have two very young children and with the bedroom window being like that the room isn’t practical for any of us to sleep in. what do you think the best scheme or grant is best to apply for?
my parents got a free boiler fitted about 5 years ago. they now want to move, do they have to pay anything towards the boiler and if so, who to?
We own our house my husband is 60 and works part time i work full time are we entitled to any help we reiceive working tax for a new door
@mb. It depends what scheme the free boiler was obtained under. Check the terms and conditions on any documentation that they still have or call them.
Hi, is there any roofing grant avaliable for un employed people
I have expensive electric heating with storage radiators. Is there any assistance or grants to change to gas central heating? Thanks, Allan.
hi, i was wondering if there is any help available to people who live in park homes, we cant afford to replace the boiler, any help will be gratefully received thanks
Hi, i was advised by the housing executive that i was eligible for double glazing replacement of my single glazed, very poor condition windows. But now, i can’t seem to get hold of ANYONE who knows what i’m talking about. Can you help?
@redpoetess. We assume you’re in Northern Ireland. There was a plan to ensure all Housing Executive properties were double glazed by the end of 2015. We’re not sure where the scheme is up to at the moment but you could try ringing 03448 920 900 or perhaps contacting your local councillor.
Please can you inform me if i can get help with new windows in cardiff
Could you please inform me i am 75 years of age and own a shop and flat is there any grants available to convert it into a house
does anyone know of any grants available in Barnsley for replacement double glazing windows.
Hi, I recently rented my property but have been looking to replace the very worn wooden framed (albeit double glazed but drafty) windows in a old and character house (not listed but would like to maintain the aesthetics) with UPVC. Are there any grants available given my circumstances? Many thanks
hi could you advise me of any help i could get in replacing the double glazing in my privately rented home. i am on income support and my gour year old lives with me. My landlord doesn’t seem bothered with my concerns. two of the safety locks are broken. all the handles have been reduced to one per window when the re is supposed to be two. one window actually has a handle from a pvc window unit that doesn’t fit and some of the wooden frames are broken. every window has condensation if there is a differentiation in temperature and i’ve had to scrape mould out of the seals and put clear silicon around the glass to stop any more growing. any help is hugely appreciated
@Kerry. There are not many grants available for windows. But you may find something on the Turn2 Us grants search if the above suggestions do not help.
Please are they grant for landlords, I have just received a quote to replace the very old storage heaters which not very energy efficient. These heaters which are dimplex brand are more 15 years old, and consume a lot of electrical power No amount is too small, will be happy to get a certain percentage as grant. The tenant has been living for long as i cannot really increase the rent to meet the cost. kind regards
Hi, I wanted to enquire if there was a Government scheme for the replacement of front doors? My dad is nearly 80 years old and his double glazed front door is leaking badly and wind blows through it and it needs to be replaced before the winter sets in. He lives in the Broxbourne, Herts area. Any advice you can give of grants available or discounts for something like this would be appreciated. Many thanks Mary
hi, I’ve heard about grants for new front doors. I own my own home and have two young children. My front door is a very old wooden one and lets lots of cold in. We live in hyndburn, Lancashire.
Does anyone know of any grants in South gloucestershire to help with flat roof insulation I only receive disability allowance many thanks
@jonico. Try the government green deal initiative
@moore156. We’re not aware of grants specifically for doors but you could try the government Green Deal initiative. Here is the Hyndburn Borough Council grants page too

Hi. I am noise sensitive to traffic. Moved into a flat few months ago. There is double glazing . However it seems to leak a lot of noise. Woken at night by traffic. Cant wear ear plugs due to ear problem. Have disability also. Would like need Secondary accoustic glazing. Are there grants for this? Or any help! Hardly slept at new flat concerned.
Thanks for any tips help and advise. Noise sensitivity should be classed as a disability. It can really wreck lives. I know several people who have it and boy do they suffer. Thanks again.
Your council may have grants available but it might also be worth trying your Landlord too if you are renting. There are not many grants available for soundprooding unfortunately.
Hi, my sister live in a council house with old wooden Windows which leaks, cold wind and drafting in, the council refuse to replace the windows is there any grant for her, soon will be winter, she’s disable and doesn’t work, there is also baby in the house 15 months old, any help will do much appreciated.
Check that the council does not have plans to replace windows at some point in the future. Check also that she is allowed to change windows in the terms of her tenancy agreement. It might be worth checking the Green Deal to see if you might be eligible.
Hi just wondered if you do grants for double glazing Windows? I have double glazing already but they are rubbish and causing condensations
My wife and i have had to move into a 3 bedroom semi due to domestic problems. The property has a gas back boiler which is very inefficient. I am semi retired and my wife is registered disabled. She receives Employment Support allowance ( income based ) and Disability living allowance at the higher rate. We would like to know if there is financial help available to allow us to have a Combi Boiler fitted in our property? We are prepared to contribute to the installation, but need help with costs. Can anyone advise. Thankyou.
Hiya, iv missed the opportunity to get a warm scheme payment of 140£ by my supplier and because I’m not a pensioner I cannot get help from the government. Is there anyway of getting help towards my gas for the winter at all please. Many thanks for your time
We don’t do grants specifically but provide information on grants. There are not many grants available for double glazing, especially if you already have them in place. The Green Deal scheme is the nearest option that might help.
The ECO or affordable warmth scheme might be your best option.
Hi, My father is 74 and lives in a 3 bedroom ex council flat in Glasgow. I really don’t know if he is entitled to any loans or grants for double glazing and central heating, at the moment he has no heating at all and the windows are old metal framed ones which were put in when the flats were built in the 1950s. I would appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks

Hi, my husband and I live in a private rented property with our two young children and 2 and 7. Our youngest has health problems as do I and my husband (we both suffer from a heart condition and I have wear and tear of my spine) our son who is two suffers with a haemangioma on his liver and daughter has arthritis in her legs. I don’t know if we are eligible for any help towards getting double glazing done as our landlord said he is unable to do it even tho it was supposed to be done in June. We live in a 4 bed property and it is very cold all the time. Please message me back so I can see what is available for us as we can’t afford to move property and are unable to get any help from the council regards a property.
My wife and I have recently had a new addition to the family, a baby boy, but unfortunately Samuel has been diagnosed as terminally ill with a life limiting syndrome called Patau Syndrome. Now that the weather has turned colder our home suffers from major condensation which streams down windows. Although the windows are double-glazed they are over 15 years old and have obviously failed over time. As we have a lot of moisture the ceiling and windows have started to grow mould which requires regular cleaning/bleaching. I have concerns over the health of our new born and our other 2 children but can’t afford to have the windows replaced. Zoe and I live in a 3 bedroom mid-terrace house and I earn above any benefit thresholds. I wondered, with Samuel’s disability, whether there are any grants available from the government to help towards the cost of new windows?
I am over 65 and need to replace our failing double-glazed windows which we put in 27 years ago. Is there a grant available for this?
There are very few grants for windows, but try your local council to see if there are any locally available home improvement grants.
Can I get new window grant if I work part time a have child under 16
I’m over 60 years of age and own my home I would like to know if I would qualify for a full central heating grant . There are radiators in most of the rooms in my property but there is no boiler it has been like this for nearly 40 years the only form of heating is a gas fire in my kitchen and front room my water heating is from an emersion tank which won’t even fill my bath with enough hot water the house is freezing during the winter months
It’s unlikely unfortunately. The best places to try are your local council, the major energy companies or the Turn 2 Us Grant Search
Hi i bought my home 3 years ago and have three children I’m a single mum !! We rent a sandstone cottage. The back of the house has double glazing but the front hasn’t. There are 2 windows and a front door which are all old and rotting causing draughts and condensation. Are there any grants available . We have had quotes ranging from £1090 – £1500 all of which our landlord say are too high.
You could check with the Energy Saving Trust to see whether there is any funding for landlords under the Green Deal ECO scheme.

Good afternoon. I’m 65 years old I had bought my one bedroom flat in June 1999 in Barkingside ILford unfortunately as a London Licensed Black cab driver at the time I had to sell my property to rent it back in May 2007 Due to medical condition stopping me working as a London cabby. As of that time until this present day I have a fantastic Landlord hes more like a friend than a landlord I’m now drawing my pension via pension credit and housing benefits pays direct to my landlord as I arranged years ago which works very well. My Landlord has unfortunately approached the council against my instructions which were!!… just install dble glazing as no plans or permission is required.but as he informed them they now say he needs to apply for planning permission for it and now its frightend him off to install it Is there anything else I can do to have this sorted out as I have have checked this as you do not need any planning permission as its not council property.

There are very few grants available for this kind of thing, but if you try the Turn 2 Us grants search tool you can search in your own area for specific grants, charities etc. It might also be worth contacting your local council to see whether it offers any home improvement or renovation grants (though, be aware that not many do nowadays).

Hi I’m on a low income under £800 before deductions a month. A single occupant homeowner with no dependant children. Outgoing after mortgage and utilities left with just over £60 a month to live on so not qualify for any benifit. My doors and damaging my floor and window leaking, single glazed window in bathroom cannot open so no vent, bedroom window falls off when wind blows si tie it down. How is it the government says everyone is entitled to a grant and investing in people to make their homes greener when only pick and choose who’s quality. Grimsby do not seem to have registered green grant installers. One trade company said to me they are staying clear of this government scheme. Can anyone advise or have any idea why this grant is so hard to apply for as I am desperate to get some help as my home is very cold and pointless switching on the gas as it never solves the heating problems.
